The state government is taking major steps towards environmental protection, clean energy, and modern urban transport, with public interest at the center. In this context, Urban Development and Energy Minister Shri A.K. Sharma informed after today’s cabinet meeting that the operation of electric buses on the Net Cost Contract (NCC) model will soon begin in Uttar Pradesh. The pilot project will first be implemented in Lucknow, Kanpur, and their adjoining major towns.
Shri Sharma said that under the project, private operators will run electric buses on 10 routes each in Lucknow and Kanpur. Each operator will be allotted only its designated routes, and no other operator will be appointed on those routes, ensuring systematic operation and transparency. The contract will be valid for 12 years from the date of commercial operation. During this period, private operators will handle procurement, supply, maintenance, infrastructure development, and fare collection.
The Minister further informed that the government will determine fares and tariff charges as per the agreement, so that affordable and convenient transport is available to passengers. Private operators will be permitted to operate buses only after obtaining the required licenses from the Transport Department and RTO/RTA. He emphasized that this initiative is not just an expansion of public transport, but a revolutionary step in environmental protection, pollution control, and public welfare. While providing modern, comfortable, and pollution-free travel to citizens, the project will also promote clean energy and green technology.
Highlighting the government’s vision, Shri Sharma said: “Our aim is to lead the cities of Uttar Pradesh towards sustainable urban mobility. Based on the success of this pilot project, the scheme will be expanded to other cities and metros.” He added that the initiative is in line with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of Swachh Bharat and green energy.
The Minister also said that the project will create new employment opportunities, encourage private investment, and reduce the financial burden on the government, while ensuring high-quality services for the public. He concluded that under the leadership of Chief Minister Shri Yogi Adityanath ji, the state government is committed to providing safe, accessible, affordable, and pollution-free transport services to citizens.
