The Union Government today said, there is no plan to legalize and tax Cannabis as alcohol and tobacco for recreational purposes at present.
In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Choudhary said, considering the potential of drug abuse and dependence disorder, Cannabis has been scheduled as the narcotic drug under the international drug convention.
He said, India is party to the said convention that prohibits the use of Cannabis for recreational purpose. The Minister said, Cannabis is one of the most commonly abused substances in India. More than three crore individuals have been reported for abusing any Cannabis product and one in eleven Cannabis users suffer from dependence.
