Book release: Book ‘COOMAR’ unveiled

On 24th May, the occasion of the birth anniversary of Maj Sudhir Kumar Walia AC SM, his family and friends organised the unveiling of ‘COOMAR’ The Story of Maj Sudhir Kumar Walia AC SM, a biographical account of his life. This book has been written by Mrs. Jaishree Laxmikant, an author based in Mumbai.

Maj Sudhir Kumar Walia AC SM was a gallant officer, from Banuri. He was from the first batch of Sainik School Sujanpur Tihra and went on to achieve greater heights in his life. He was commissioned in 4 JAT but volunteered to be a Para Commando and joined 9 PARA SF. He had also been selected to attend courses in the USA and he was elected the Best Student. Maj Sudhir was also the ADC to then Chief of Army Staff Gen V P Malik. While the Kargil war was on, he volunteered to go back to his 9 PARA COMMANDO and it was he who led the assault on Zulu Top and recaptured it. A month later, in Aug’99, he made the supreme sacrifice while fighting terrorists in jungles of Haphruda. During his service he had been awarded with a Sena Medal and a Bar to Sena Medal. Later, he was also awarded with Ashok Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award posthumously.

The book was unveiled by Subedar Rulia Ram, father of Maj Sudhir Kumar Walia. Also present at the occasion were Mrs Asha Ahluwalia, sister of Maj Sudhir Walia, her husband Pravin Ahluwalia and the rest of the family. The other esteemed guests included GOC, Rising Star Corps, Dy GOC DAH Division, MCD Commissioner Palampur and other senior serving and retired officers from defence forces, civil administration and defence enthusiasts from various locations of the country.

Mrs Jaishree Laxmikant is a freelance writer based in Mumbai. She has been writing about Armed Forces since 2019, mainly to bring the stories of our bravehearts to the fore. Her book ‘COOMAR’ is an attempt in the same direction. The book can be ordered online on Amazon.
